الدكتور مصطفى سويف هو أستاذ علم نفس مصري بكلية آداب جامعة القاهرة. له العديد من المؤلفات والدراسات في مجال علم النفس. شغل منصب رئيس الجمعية المصرية للدراسات النفسية عامي 1970 و1971، وهو مؤسس أكاديمية الفنون المصرية وأول رئيس لها بين عامي 1968 و1971.

هذا الكتاب ثمرة نشاط علمى أساسى وتطبيقى لمدة تزيد على أربعين عاما متصلة. واستنادا إلى هذه القاعدة المتينة يقدم المؤلف إطلالات مختلفة على جوانب لموضوع تعاطى المخدرات بالغة الأهمية، تتراوح بين الجوانب البحثية المنهجية والجوانب التطبيقية التى تمس أساليب العلاج والوقاية، مروراً بأمور لها طرافتها مثل الدروس العامة المستفادة من طول كدة الإشتغال العلمى بقضايا هذا المبحث. وجدير بالذكر أن فصول هذا الكتاب لا تقتصر على مخاطبة القارئ المصرى، بل يتسع أفقها أحيانا ليخاطب القارئ العربى حيثما كان. كما أنه يقدم نظرة شاملة تتناول الإسهامات الرئيسية التى شاركت بها جملة العلوم الإجتماعية (لا علم النفس فحسب) فى إلقاء الأضواء على ظاهرة تعاطى المخدرات. وفى هذا الصدد يبرز ما يمكن أن يحققه التكامل بين هذه العلوم من نظرة موضوعية تجمع بين العمق والشمول. ومما يدعم قيمة هذا الكتاب أن المؤلف عمل خبيراً فى لجنة الخبراء الدائمين لبحوث تعاطى المخدرات التابعة لهيئة الصحة العالمية فى جنيف من سنة 1971 إلى سنة 1995.
