هذا كتاب بحثي قيم يشمل بالدرس نصوص الرحالة الذين ارتحلوا داخل حدود دار الإسلام أو خارجها، والذين أثبتت رحلاتهم كتب الهيسطوغرافيا وكتب التراجم أو كتاباتهم الخاصة، والباحث يتجاوز دراسة كل كاتب على حدة إلى الدراسة الشاملة للنصوص التي يسائلها حول النقاط الآتية: ما الذي احتفظ به المؤلفون من أسفارهم؟ ما هي مصادرهم؟ ما الصُّوَر التي يعكسونها عن العالم المشاهَد؟ ما هي الحوافز (من المعتقدات دينية وقيم مادية وموروثات ثقافية ومعارف وميول) التي تستند مواقفهم؟. ولقد تقصت الدراسة أجوبة عن هذه الأسئلة وغيرها مما أثارته النصوص؛ أما في ما يخص السؤال الأخير، فإنه عمل على تحصيله من خلال إستدعاء مصادر خارج نصية، ذلك أن سلوك الملاحِظ لا ينفصم عن إنتماءاته، أصله الإجتماعي، وظيفته، ثقافته، مجتمعه. بحث قيم أشرف عليه المستشرق الكبير أندريه ميكيل، والذي كانت لكتاباته ونصائحه النفيسة أثرها في إنجاز هذه الدراسة القيمة التي ترجمها إلى العربية الدكتور "عبد النبي ذاكر"، أستحقت بإمتياز جائزة ابن بطوطة لأدب الرحلة - فرع الدراسات، وقد اختارته لجنة التحكيم من بين عدد مهم من الدراسات في أدب الرحلة لكونه يقدم معرفة جديدة مكثفة تسهم في إثراء معارفنا بخصوص تجوال الناس وسريان الأفكار.
