"في الحقيقة لقد فكرت وأفكر الآن بأن الموت تركني حينما كان جسدي صغيراً وضعيفاً جداً، وأتاني في الوقت الذي بدأ فيه جسدي ينبض برغبة عارمة في الحياة، ومن المؤسف حقاً أن الموت كان بإمكانه أن ينجز مهمته في الوقت الذي لم يكن بإمكان جسدي الصغير أن يقاوم، لكن، إذا ما فكرت في الأمر من ناحية أخرى وجدت أن رغبة والديّ في وجودي وحبهما لي كان "ربما" سبباً كافياً لبقائي على قيد الحياة، وهو ما بثًّ في داخلي كل تلك الطاقة التي جعلتني أعيش من جديد، غير أن والديّ لو كانا يعلمان بأن وجودي مستقبلاً سوف يسبب لهم كل تلك المشكلات فإنهم ربما تركوني ألفظ أنفاسي في طفولتي من دون أي شعور بالآسف على موتي". في "كمائن العتمة" يشكل الموت نافذة للإطلالة على حياة الكائن، وعلى معاناته، ووحدته، خاصة إذا كان هذا الكائن هو أنثى، ويعري المأساة الإنسانية في ظل الشرخ الموجود بين حقيقة الكائن الداخلية وبين محيطه، وهو شرخ يلغي الزمن كقيمة أساسية في العمل الروائي، ويصبح الزمن دائرياً، وشبيهاً بالدائرة المغلقة على المشاعر والأفكار، وتغدو العتمة هي الحقيقة الوحيدة، حقيقة ساطعة أكثر من الضوء. في هذا النص تذهب فاطمة المزروعي إلى أعماق بطلتها، ولا يهمها أن تنجز وصفاً مجرداً لمعاناتها، بقدر ما تبدو مشغولة بالتفاصيل التي تفضي إلى معنى الوجود تحت رحمة الخديعة التي يعيشها الأحياء، أو إلى حقيقة العدم نفسه الذي يحيط ببطلتها، وتصبح الرواية مرآة متعددة لحوار الكائن مع قدره، وكشفاً للكمائن التي تترصدنا منذ أن نفتح أعيننا للمرة الأولى على الحياة.
