هذا الجزء من قصص الأمثال، وأمثال القصص هو جانب من مجموعة للمؤلف تقع في نحو ألف أقصوصة أو دون ذلك بقليل جعلها حيناً على لسان الحيوان وحيناً آخر على لسان الإنسان، وحيناً ثالثاً على لسان جماد أو نبات، وحيناً رابعاً جعلها شركة بين بعض هذه الكائنات وبعضها الآخر، وقد توفي في الجانب الأكثر منها أن يمثل خلقاً من الأخلاق النادرة أو خالجة من خوالج النفس الغريبة أو سلوكاً من سلوك الأحياء غير قريب ولا مألوف.
وسيدي قارئ هذه الأقاصيص أن الندرة أو الغربة أو البعد عن الألف فيما وصف من خلق أو كشف عن خالجه أو أظهر من سلوك ليست ندرة القلة أو الشذوذ، ولا غربة الخصوص والبعد من الشمول، ولا ابتعاد المغايرة والاختلاف مع خبرة الناس كافة ومشاهدتهم، وإنما هي ندرة الخفاء وغرابته وبعده ليس غير. والمؤلف في هذه الأقاصيص يعرض على القارئ مقطعاً أفقياً في أخلاق الناس لا مقطعاً رأسياً فإذا بدت نماذجه غريبة أو بعدية، فإنما ذلك أنها تمثل طبقة خفيفة مستورة من أخلاق البشر وسلوكهم تغطيها وتخفيها الطبقات الظاهرة على السطح التي تشهدها كل عين ويقطن إليها كل وعي ويلتفت إليها كل انتباه ويعيها كل ذهن.
توفيت أم الأسد، فجاءته جميع الوحوش معزية إلا الفهد. ولما افتقده الأسد قيل له: إنه معتكف منذ أيام لا يبرح منزله. فأرسل الأسد في طلبه، ولما حضر سأله الأسد ما الذي منعه من المجيء لتعزيته بوالدته كباقي الوحوش. فأجاب الفهد: توفي لي ابن عزيز علي، فوجدت فقده الوجد الذي تراه وليدي حزناً على والدتك، فأكون زيفت لك حزني وهو ما لا أحتمل ولا أسيغ.
ولما انتهى الفهد من حديثه التفت الأسد إلى سائر الوحوش حوله وقال: زه، زه! هذا والله أنبل الأخلاق، هذا أنبل الأخلاق.
