Book Description
يحكي لنا كتاب «العثور على السيدة وورنكي» قصة سيندي ريجزبي — الحاصلة على لقب «معلم العام» ثلاث مرات — والسيدة باربرا وورنكي معلمة الصف الأول الابتدائي التي تركت أثرًا عميقًا في حياة سيندي. سيندي طفلة تشعر بعدم الأمان وتتوق لجذب الاهتمام، بدأت عامها الدراسي الأول في فصل معلمة تؤذي مشاعر الأطفال وتفرق بينهم في المعاملة. وبعد بدء العام الدراسي بشهرين دخلت مديرة المدرسة الفصل، وأعلنت أن نصف الأطفال سينقلون مع معلمة أخرى إلى فصل جديد في الطابق الأرضي في غرفة رطبة مظلمة لا نوافذ لها، واتضح لاحقًا أن هذا التغيير أفضل شيء حدث في حياة سيندي. فالمعلمة الجديدة السيدة وورنكي جعلت التعلم تجربة ممتعة لتلاميذها، واهتمت بكل تلميذ، وحولت الفصل الدراسي إلى مكان «ساحر»، وشجعت التلاميذ على السعي لتحقيق أحلامهم. مع أن سيندي خشيت أن تكتشف إبداعها وهي تلميذة، فإن السيدة وورنكي شجعتها على القراءة ونظم الشعر الذي أصبح شغفها فيما بقي من عمرها. ظلت الاثنتان على اتصالٍ سنوات، لكن علاقتهما انقطعت عندما انتقلت السيدة وورنكي خارج الولاية. حاولت سيندي مرارًا البحث عنها لتشكرها على الأثر الكبير الذي أحدثته في حياتها لكن بلا جدوى. ثم عملت سيندي نفسها في التدريس، ودرّست لأكثر من ألفي طالب على مدار ثلاثين عامًا، وحصلت على لقب «معلم العام» في ولايتها. وفي النهاية أدركت أنها طوال تلك المدة لم تكن تبحث عن السيدة باربرا وورنكي، بل كانت تبحث عن «السيدة وورنكي» التي بداخلها.
