تعيش مدينة جدة منذ أكثر من أربعة عقود تحولات وتغيرات سريعة ومتلاحقة، فقد توسعت المدينة أكثر من 45 مرة عن حجمها الأصلى، ولا تزال حركة النمو والتوسع فيها فى عنفوانها. ولقد مرت جدة ـ كما مرت كافة مناطق المملكة العربية السعودية ـ بمرحلة طفرة اقتصادية منذ عام 1974، وحتى منتصف ثمانينيات القرن العشرين الميلادى. وقد أعادت هذه الطفرة كتابة التاريخ الاجتماعى لمدينة جدة. ونظرًا لأن الأسرة هى إحدى أهم مؤسسات أى مجتمع من المجتمعات، وأحد المؤشرات التى يُقرأ عبرها تاريخ أى مجتمع، فقد سعينا فى هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل تاريخ جدة الاجتماعى، من خلال تحليل تاريخ الأسرة فيها. ومن ثم انصب اهتمام الدراسة على تمعن التحولات التى طرأت على حياة الأسرة عموما، والمرأة بصفة خاصة، كأحد أهم أضلاع الأسرة؛ آخذين فى الاعتبار السياقات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية العامة، والسياسات الموجهة للحياة الاجتماعية لأهل جدة، وبذلك ترسم هذه الدراسة الاجتماعية التحليلية غير المسبوقة صورة إجمالية ممتعة وعميقة فى آن واحد لما خبرته مدينة جدة من مؤثرات طالت المملكة العربية السعودية ككل.
