أوريون مركبة فضاء أمريكية تزن أربعة ألاف طن وتسير بقوة الدفع النووي، آلة قادرة على الوصول إلى المريخ وزحل حاملة ألف طن من المواد المتفجرة. هذا كان بالطبع الهدف المعلن للجمهور الأمريكي أما السبب الحقيقي لبدء هذا المشروع الباهظ التكاليف فهو مفاجأة الروس بآلة حرب نووية قادرة على الوصول إلى أي مكان على الكوكب وتدميره دون أن يستطيع الخصوم فعل شيء بخصوص ذلك. في منتصف القرن فوجئ الأمريكيون بإطلاق أول قمر صناعي روسي. وما أقلق قادة أمريكا لم يكن التفوق التقني الذي حققه الروس في ميدان الفضاء آنذاك ، بل احتمال تزويد الأقمار الصناعية بقنابل نووية - وهذا ما حدث بالفعل - تضع الولايات المتحدة تحت رحمة تهديد لا يمكن ردعه. يقدم هذا الكتاب عرضا غنيا بالمعلومات حول مراحل العمل في مشروع المركبة أوريون وحجم الجهد المبذول في تنفيذها. ويزود القارئ الغير متخصص بصورة واضحة مركزة عن مبادئ الفيزياء الذرية وأسرار صناعة المواد الشديدة الانفجار مثل C4 وغير ذلك مما يمتع ويفيد.
