تحتل الرياضيات مكانة خاصة في مجال العلم، رغم أنها تشكل نظاماً مستقلاً بحد ذاته، فهي تزود العلوم الأخرى بأداة للتفكير وبعبارات رمزية وبإستنتاجات رياضية لتنسيق التجارب وتغيير العوامل في الأبحاث العلمية لتعميم المبادئ والقوانين، وعلى هذا الأساس تعتبر الرياضيات العامل الأهم في وحدة العلوم وتنشيط التفكير العلمي.
تطورت الرياضيات خلال القرن التاسع عشر من ناحية نشاطاتها وأهدافها وطرق دراستها، وقام العلماء منذ العام 1830 بعملية جرد منظمة لمحتوياتها فحققوا أهدافاً واضحة من الإمتزاج والتماسك، فتحولت النظم الرياضية التقليدية إلى نظام وحدوي للرياضيات هي رياضياتنا المعاصرة؛ حيث أصبح التحكم بالتركيبات الرياضية ممكناً بدل الخضوع لمحاولات الخطأ والصواب أو عامل الصدفة.
وبعبارة أخرى أصبح التفكير العلمي الجديد يدعونا إلى إعادة تشكيل فهمنا للماضي ويمدنا بمستقبل نبنيه بإرادتنا.
من ناحية أخرى، نرى أن مشاكل تدريس الرياضيات هي من أصعب المشاكل، فتأثيرها لا يتناول علماء الرياضيات المحترفين فحسب بل يؤثر في جميع مجالات التعليم كما يؤثر على علماء الفيزياء والهندسة وحتى علماء الإقتصاد والإجتماع وغيرهما...
لذلك وجب إعادة تركيب طرق التدريس حسب الروح المعاصرة للرياضيات، فتاريخ الرياضيات لا يمكن أن يكون أساساً لتعليم الرياضيات، لكن التعرُّف إلى عمل العلماء والأساليب التي اتبعوها يساهم مساهمة فعالة في تشويق النشء إلى هذا العلم المجرَّد، ما يجب أن نعلِّمه لأبنائنا هو المشاركة الفعَّالة في الحالة الذهنية للرياضيات الحديثة.
بعبارة أخرى تتضح قيمة العلم بصورة أقوى إذا استطاع المدرِّس الربط بين تفاعل الفكر العلمي والفكر الإجتماعي في كل مرحلة من مراحل تطور الإنسانية، عندئذ يظهر جلياً للتلاميذ أن ما وصلنا إليه من تقدم لم يكن وليد الصدفة وإنما حصل نتيجة جهد وعمل استغرقا عمر البشرية كلها، وأن كل فكرة جديدة لم يكن من السهل الوصول إليها دون عمل وجهد العلماء، عندها يشعر الناشئ مدى ما يستحقه هؤلاء العلماء من إحترام وتقدير، ويحفِّز الأجيال إلى إقتفاء خطاهم في تذليل الصعوبات وحل المشكلات.
وما دراسة آثار علماء الرياضيات سوى دراسة لتاريخ الرياضيات بوجه آخر، وقد اقتفينا أثر هؤلاء الروَّاد واعتمدنا في ترتيبهم المنهج الألفبائي للغة العربية مع ذكر اسم العالم الرياضي بحرفٍ أجنبي مخافة التباس اللفظ في العربية، مع ذكر فهارس متسلسل في آخر الكتاب.
