هذه مذكرات "سليمان حافظ" (1896-1968) وهو واحد من رجال اللحظات الحساسة في التاريخ المصري الحديث، فقد كان المرشّح لخلافة علي باشا ماهر على رئاسة الوزراء في ثاني حكومات الثورة، وعندما رفض المنصب عين وزيراً للداخلية ونائباً لرئيس الوزراء، وهو المنصب الذي تولاه بعده جمال عبد الناصر.. فأصبح سليمان حافظ المستشار القانوني لرئيس الجمهورية اللواء محمد نجيب. لكنه كان من الأساس محامياً ومستشاراً بمجلس الدولة وأحدَ اللذين أوقفوا هذه المؤسسة القانونية العريقة على قدميها.. وكان من أربعة مدنيين انضموا إلى مجلس قيادة الثورة في بداية عهدها.. كما كان ضمن اللجنة الثلاثية التي كتبت وثيقة تنازل الملك فاروق عن عرش مصر، وهو حامل هذه الوثيقة إلى الملك بتعليمات علي باشا ماهر رئيس الوزراء في تلك اللحظة. وفي أواخر نوفمبر عام 1956، عندما أذاع عبد الناصر خبر العدوان الثلاثي، توجه سليمان حافظ إليه ليكون أول من طالبه بالعودة إلى موقعه العسكري للجهاد ضد المحتل.
