نبذة النيل والفرات: "قيس بن الخطيم" الذي عاش في الجاهلية وأدرك الإسلام هذا الشاعر الذي لم ينل نصيبه من الاهتمام ولم يلق ما يستحق من العناية به أو الالتفات إليه فلم يتعرض له أحد من الدارسين بالدرس المفصل سوى شذرات قليلة وإشارات سريعة لا تفي بالغرض ولا ترسم صورة جلية عنه في حين تصدى جل الدراسات للمشهورية من شعراء عصره ولم تتخط حدودهم إلا لماماً ومن هنا تعمد هذه المحاولة إلى إظهار شاعريته من خلال الدراسة والتحليل القائمين على النص الشعري على الرغم من قلة شعره الذي وصل إلينا عبر ديوانه الذي حققه الدكتور الأستاذ ناصر الدين الأسد. بيد أن العمل بمجمله اعتماد على الشعر الأصيل المحقق النسبة إليه، أما الزيادات المتنازع عليها أو التي يحوم عليها الشك فقد كان حظها الأعراض والإهمال سوى أبيات قليلة رجحت نسبتها إلى الشاعر وقد اقتضت طبيعة الموضوع أو حجم المادة المهيأة للدراسة أن يسلك في ثلاثة فصول وخاتمة عن النتائج التي آل إليها العمل وقد استوى الفصل الأول على قسمين تحدث الأول منهما عن بيئة ابن الخطيم (يثرب) الجغرافية والاجتماعية والدينية والأدبية في حين عقد القسم الثاني منه لاسم الشاعر ونسبته وأسرته وصفاته وأخلاقه من فروسية وشجاعة وكرم وعفة ثم ركن الحديث إلى مطالبته بالثأر ومصرعه وأيام قومه واختتم الفصل بالكلام عن منابع شاعريته ومنزلته في الشعر وديوانه، وكان مدار الفصل الثاني موضوعات شعره التي كان الفخر يحتل مكان الصدارة منها، وقد أجرى فخره على ضربين هما: الفخر الشخصي والفخر القبلي ثم كان الحديث عن الموضوعات الأخرى من غزل وحكمة ومناقضة ومديح... الخ. وأفرد الفصل الثالث للدراسة الفنية: البناء الفني للقصيدة عند الشاعر، ولغته، وصوره، وموسيقى شعره.
