تبين ميديا بنجامن في هذا الكتاب المقنع بصورة لافتة، والذي استوفى حقه من البحث، أن الطائرة بدون طيّار (درون) هي السلاح الأحدث في ترسانة الأسلحة عالية التقنية والمُتحكّم بها عن بُعد.
وعلى الرغم من أنها لا تختلف عن الطائرات المقاتلة العادية في قدرتها التدميرية وبربريتها وترويعها المدنيين، فإنها بطبيعتها أكثر ملاءمة للمهام القذرة والخطرة.
لذلك، تعوّل الولايات المتحدة عليها في تنفيذ برامج الإغتيالات والقتل المستهدف، ضمن ما تسميه "الحرب على الإرهاب"، منتهكة في معظم الأحيان القانونين الدولي والأمريكي معاً.
وكما توثّق بنجامن، فإن وكالة المخابرات المركزية الأميركية (سي. آي. ايه.) هي المسؤولة، لا البنتاغون، عن شنّ معظم ضربات الطائرات بدون طيّار، من دون أي محاسبة أو دليل أو محاكمة تدين المستهدف بالموت، بل تماماً حسب أهواء البيت الأبيض، وبحصانة كاملة من المسؤولية عن قتل المدنيين الموجودين في ساحة الإعدام، والذين كثيراً ما يتحوّلون إلى مجرّد "أضرار جانبيّة" - سواء في أفغانستان أو باكستان أو اليمن أو الصومال أو فلسطين أو العراق أو مؤخراً سورية.
كذلك تتقصّى بنجامن في هذا الكتاب بدقّة تاريخ الطائرات بدون طيّار، وأنواعها، وتخصّصاتها، وتكلفتها، ودرجات تسليحها، ودور المؤسسة العسكرية الإسرائيلية (خصوصاً مهندس الطيران الإسرائيلي أبراهام كاريم) والأميركية في تطويرها.
ولأنّ الطائرات بدون طيّار أكثر ملاءمة لمهام المراقبة والتجسّس (إذ تستطيع متابعة شخص من إرتفاع 60 ألف قدم أحياناً، وتصويره بالأشعة تحت الحمراء وفوق البنفسجية)، تتوقّع بنجامن رواج إستخدامها داخلياً في التجسّس على الناشطين والمواطنين الأميركيين العاديين.
