إن الخطر الناتج عن إستعمال المخدرات والمواد المشابهة والمسببة للإدمان، على الشعوب لا يقل عن الخطر الناتج عن الأمراض الوبائية أو الحروب بل يزيد، والخطر الناتج عن هذه المواد المسببة للإدمان ذو شقين: أولهما: ما تسببه على مستعملها من ضرر بالغ يتمثل في أضرار صحية ونفسية تؤدي إلى ضعف أدائه وكفاءته في العمل وتجعله عالة على المجتمع؛ وثانيهما: ما تسببه على المجتمع من زيادة في معدَّل الجريمة بسبب أولئك المدمنين.
والمخدرات والمواد المسببة للإدمان محرمة عالمياً فيما عد الخمور وهي جميعاً بما فيها الخمور محرمة في الشريعة الإسلامية لما تسببه من ضرر وهلاك للشخص.
من منطلق خطورة هذه المواد المسببة للإدمان وما تحدثه من ضرر بالغ على الشعوب، جمع المؤلف في كتابه هذا بعض المعلومات من كتب ومقالات متفرقة لتوضيح أنواع هذه المواد وتصنيفها وتأثيرها وضررها وتركيبها الكيميائي، وقد صنفها إلى قسمين رئيسيين: الأول: المواد التي يسبب إدمانها والتعود عليها إعتماداً نفسياً وعضوياً وهي الأكثر خطراً، والثاني: المواد التي تسبب إعتماداً نفسياً فقط وهي الأقل خطراً.
ويضم هذا الكتيب أربعة فصول، يتضمن الفصل الأول تصنيف هذه المواد والطرق المختلفة لوصولها، كما يتضمن الفصل الثاني أضرار هذه المواد، بينما يعطي الفصل الثالث أنواع هذه المواد التي تسبب إعتماداً نفسياً وعضوياً، والفصل الرابع يغطي المواد التي تسبب إعتماداً نفسياً فقط.
