التعبيرية نزعة فنية وأدبية ترمي إلى تمثيل الأشياء، كما تصورها انفعالات الفنان أو الأديب لا كما في الحقيقة. والواقع تمثل أحد المذاهب الأدبية والفنية التي ظهرت في ألمانيا قبيل الحرب العالمية الأولى وازدرهت خلالها. وهي من أهم الحركات الثورية في المسرح التي وقفت ضد المذهب الطبيعي والواقعي، لأنها تتحرك باتجاه الأعماق الداخلية للإنسان.
وفي هذا الكتاب "المسرح التعبيري" أول دراسة عراقية تعرضت لظهور المذهب التعبيري في المسرح العالمي بغية التعرف على عوامل وأسباب ظهوره من الناحية الفكرية والاجتماعية والفنية، وتجديد أهم سماته الأسلوبية (الجمالية) وما يطرحه من أفكار إنسانية، وأثرها على المسرح العراقي.
ويهدف هذا البحث أولاً: تحديد الخصائص الأساسية للمذهب التعبيري في المسرح من الناحيتين: أولأ: أ-النص المسرحي العالمي؛ ب-العرض المسرحي العالمي. ثانياً: أثر المسرح التعبيري العالمي على المسرح العراقي من الناحيتين: أ-النص المسرحي العراقي؛ ب-العرض المسرحي العراقي من المدارس والاتجاهات في الإخراج العالمي ومنها الأسلوب التعبيري وإعطائها الخصوصية المحلية.
