على طريق العلم والمعرفة يمضي الإنسان بخطى واسعة نحو اكتشاف الجديد من مجالات لم تكتشف من قبل وتطوير وتحديث ما سبق التوصل إليه من علوم وإنجازات. وعلى الرغم من أن مجال شبكات الكمبيوتر يعد من المجالات الحديثة نسبياً-مقارنة بالمجالات الأخرى مثل الطب والفلك-إلا أن هذا المجال تطور خلال الفترة الماضية تطوراً مذهلاً. وأدى اقتحام العديد من الشركات الكبرى لهذا المجال إلى حدوث العديد من الطفرات الهائلة التي أدت إلى تحول الغالبية العظمى من الشركات والهيئات إلى الاعتماد على شبكات الكمبيوتر في دارة وتشغيل أنظمتها وأعمالها. وقد ظهرت العديد من المجلات والدوريات على المستويين العالمي والعربي التي تختص بشرح وتوضيح كل صغيرة وكبيرى في مجال شبكات الكمبيوتر بدءاً من نظم تشغيل الشبكات المحلية LAM وحتى طرق الاتصال بالانترنت وإدارة مواقعها. وبدأ القارئ العربي يصطدم بالعديد من المصطلحات الشبكية المعقدة أثناء قراءته لكتاب أو اطلاعه على مجلة. فلا يخلو مقال أو بحث يختص بشبكات الكمبيوتر من العديد من المصطلحات المستحدثة مثل CDP أو DHCP أو IPX/SPX أو SNA، وغيرها من المصطلحات التي لا يستطيع القارئ أحياناً تفهم معناها فيضطر لأخذها على علتها أو يحاول الوصول بعد جهد جهيد خلال المراجع الإنجليزية أو بعض المواقع على الانترنت إلى معنى واضح لهذه المصطلحات. وعلى الرغم من ظهور العديد من الكتب العربية التي تختص بشرح وتوضيح مبادئ وأساسيات وأسلوب عمل شبكات الكمبيوتر، إلا أن هذه الكتب-على الأقل غالبيتها-لم تتضمن ملحقاً Glossary خاصاً لتوضيح ما تمّ ذكره بين صفحات الكتاب من مصطلحات كما هو متبع في الكتب الإنجليزية. وسعياً منا لإيجاد حلاً لتلك الصعوبات فقد حاولنا جمع أكبر عدد من المصطلحات الخاصة بشبكات الكمبيوتر في معجم شامل يشرح ويبسط معاني هذه المصطلحات بلغة عربية بسيطة. وقد استعنا في سبيل ذلك بكمّ هائل من المراجع الإنجليزية من كتب وموسوعات وكذلك العديد من منشورات الشركات الكبرى المتخصصة في مجال شبكات الكمبيوتر.
