تكلف المؤسسة الكبرى مراقبة الحسابات "آن" بمهمة التفاوض مع العمال في أحد مصانع النسيج التابع للمؤسسة بعد أن قررت الإدارة إغلاق المصنع. وعندما تعرض الموضوع في اجتماع عاد لنقابة العمال يحاول بعض العمال المشاغبين أن يفتكوا بها فينقذها رئيس العمال "باك" ويهربها بمساعدة شقيقه إلى بيته رغم أنها عارضت المشروع الذي تبناه ودعا إليه وهو شراء المصنع وإدارته ذاتياً. حاولت الشابة من جانبها إقناع رئيس العمال بعدم جدوى شراء المصنع وإدارته ذاتياً لعدم وجود الخبرة لديه ولا لدى العاملين بالمصنع بإدارة المشروعات التجارية ولا مواجهة المنافسة التي اضطرت المؤسسة إلى اتخاذ قرار إغلاق المصنع فضلاً عن أن صاحب المؤسسة لم يكن ليرضى أن يستمر المصنع في العمل لينافس ثلاثة مصانع أخرى ملك للمؤسسة. يتطور الصراع بين آن ونفسها بعد أن أصبحت ممزقة بين و اجبها نحو المؤسسة وعطفها على موقف العمال وعائلاتهم وكذلك حبها لرئيس العمال كانت كل الظروف تقف عائقاً ضد حبهما.
