توجهت الرواية العربية المعاصرة في عدد من النماذج المتقدمة، فنياً وفكرياً، إلى الصحراء، وكان في طليعة هذا التوجه، أن المكان الصحراوي الروائي تجاوز تكوين بيئة الرواية ومنح عالمها الداخلي مزيداً من التنامي والحيوية والجماليات الإضافية الخاصة. ولقد أدى تزايد الاهتمام بالصحراء العربية إلى وجود وفرة نسبية من الروايات العربية التي توجهت إلى الصحراء لجعلها مكاناً أو موضوعاً. وقد انطلق بحث هذا الكتاب أساساً من الوجود الأولي لهذه الوفرة التي يهدف تناولها إلى تبيان النقاط التالية: اطلاع القارئ على أبرز الروايات العربية ذات الصلة المميزة بالصحراء سواء كان ذلك على مستوى جعلها مكاناً أو موضوعاً، 2-تبيان أبرز الأسباب التي رآها الباحث وراء توجه الرواية العربية في أبرز نماذجها المتقدمة إلى الصحراء، 2-تبيان الكيفيات والوسائل التقنية التي اعتمدتها هذه الروايات في التعامل مع الصحراء، 4-الاطلاع على مدى استفادة الرواية العربية من جماليات الصحراء، 5-الاطلاع أيضاً على ما حاولت الرواية العربية رؤيته أو استيحاؤه من قضايا فكرية واجتماعية وسياسية ذات صلة قوية بالصحراء، 6-تبيان ما يمكن أن يؤدي إليه التعامل وفي إطار العلاقة بين الزمان والمكان والشخصيات وسيرورة الأحداث، 7-محاولة البرهنة على وجود رابط بين الصحراء والسوية المتقدمة التي أصابتها بعض الروايات التي اعتمدت الصحراء مكاناً-روائياً مستفيدة مما تتمتع به الصحراء من جماليات نادرة وجغرافيا عربية لها تجذرها الخاص في أبناء هذه المنطقة.
