لماذا أصبحنا المشكلة رقم واحد بالنسبة إلى العالم بأسره؟ ما الشيء الذي يميّزنا عن بقية أمم الأرض لكي نصبح العدو الذي يتجرأ على تحدّي أكبر حضارة على وجه البسيطة في عصرنا هذا؟ لماذا أصبح الخطاب السياسي العربي مجيَّشاً بمعظمه لمحاربة هذه الحضارة الغربية؟ ولماذا تحوّلت كل خطابات القومجيين العرب والأصوليين الإسلامويين إلى خطاب واحد جبّار يهدو صاخباً من المحيط إلى الخليج بإحتقار الغرب وكره الغرب؟ السبب الرئيسي لذلك كله إنما يعود، في نظر المؤلّف، إلى إنغلاق لاهوتي مستحكم وعميق الجذور في تاريخنا؛ إنغلاق مؤداه أننا الحضارة الوحيدة على وجه الأرض التي تعتقد بأنها تمتلك الحقيقة الإلهية المطلقة، لا بل وتحتكرها احتكاراً كاملاً ونهائياً لنفسها من دون سائر الأمم، أي تلك الحقيقة العمودية الشاقولية النازلة من فوق إلى تحت، من السماء إلى الأرض. ضمن هذا المنظور، تتخذ مشكلة الأصولية كل أبعادها وخطورتها، فالأصولية الإسلامية تمثّل حالياً العدو الأكبر للحضارة الحديثة، الحضارة الغربية، بما تختزنه من قيم الحداثة والتنوير والتقدم والإنفتاح والتسامح والتعايش... إلخ. وعليه يحاول المؤلّف أن يفكّك أركيولوجياً وجينيالوجياً داء السلفية المزمن الذي يعتري الإسلام، وكذلك لاهوت القرون الوسطى الذي ما برح متلبثاً بنا حتى اليوم، فضلاً عن لاهوت العُنف وفقه الجهاد وحدوده في الإسلام، وصولاً إلى تفكيك الأرثوذكسية السُنّية نفسها التي كانت لها الغلبة الحاسمة منذ إنتصار الحنابلة وانهيار العقل وقيم الأنسنة في تاريخنا.
