كثيرا ما كتب الكتاب وتحدث الأدباء وحاضر الخطباء عن أبي القاسم الشابي، ولكنه ظل مع ذلك يكتنفه الغموض ويحيطه الإبهام، ولم يعرف الناس والأدباء منهم خاصة، حتى الآن إلآ الجزء القليل من حياته وأدبه، وبقي ما سوى ذلك وهو الكثير الأهم مغموراً عند أقارب الشابي وأصدقائه حتى اليوم... ولسنا نعرف شاعراً معاصراً نكب بما نكب به الشابي، في حياته وبعد موته، دون أن تتحرك بد واحدة لخدمة هذا الشاعر العبقري الفذ، هذا الذي خلف لنا تراثاً أدبياً ضخماً، ومدرسة ثائرة في الشعر العربي الحديث. وذلك رغم أن عمره الزاخر بالإنتاج والإبداع، لم يتجاوز عمر زهرة في مطلع الربيع. إذ مات وعمره ربع قرن من الزمن، هاته المدة اليسيرة التي لا تتيح للإنسان أن يستكمل خلالها شروط الثقافة والتعلم المنتج، فضلاً عن الإبداع والابتكار اللذين يتسم بهما كل ما صاغته قريحة الشاعر، أو عبرت عنه شاعريته النابغة. وما سعت إليه فصول هذا الكتاب هو أن تقدم كل ما يجب أن تقدم من حياة الشابي، وجوانب شاعريته والهدف إعطاء القارئ صورة واضحة المعالم، كاملة الخطوط، عن حياة الشابي وبيئته، وجوانب أخرى تتصل بهذين اتصالاً وثيقاً مرة وغير وثيق مرة أخرى. إلى جانب هذا ضم الكتاب نماذج مختارة مما كتبه الشابي وهي ليست كل ما ترك الشابي أو أحسنه، وإنما هي مجموعة مما تم الحصول عليه من شعره.
