الحيوان كائن حي يمتاز بالحياة والحس والحركة. والحيوانات أنواع عديدة يتصف كل منها بمميزات معينة. وفي هذه المعلقة الجميلة يتعرف الطفل مختلف أنواع الحيوانات، وهو إذا أجاد معرفة الهجاء من "معلقة الألفباء" يحتاج الآن إلى مادة قراءة في نفس المستوى الفني والتشويقي والتثقيفي وهذا ما تجسده "معلقة حديقة الحيوان" هذه إذ إنها وضعت لتخدم هدفين رئيسين: -الأول تثقيفي تربوي يتعرف فيه الطفل على الحيوانات الأليفة كالعنزة والخروف، وحيوانات الغابة كالأسد والفيل والغزال، والحيوانات المائية كالتمساح والحوت وعجل البحر، والطيور كالطاووس والنسر والببغاء. -والثاني فني يصقل ذوق الطفل ويساعده على التمييز بين الألوان فيجد في هذه المعلقة أن الصور جميلة والألوان مشوقة والحيوانات لوحات حية رائعة لا ينقصها سوى الحركة. هذه المعلقة في غرفة الصف (أو في غرفة الطفل الخاصة) هي في الواقع إدخال العالم الخارجي النابض بالحياة إلى غرفة الصف، وليس أجمل من عالم الحيوان عالم محبب إلى قلب الطفل، تطل به غرفة الصف على العالم الخارجي.
