ابن العبري (623 - 685 هـ = 1226 - 1286 م)
غريغوريوس (واسمه في الولادة يوحنا) ابن أهرون (أو هارون) بن توما الملطي، أبو الفرج المعروف بابن العبري: مؤرخ سرياني مستعرب، من نصارى اليعاقبة.
ولد في ملطية (من ولاية ديار بكر) وفر مع أبيه إلى أنطاكية، سنة 1243 م، بسبب هجوم التتار، فتعلم العربية والطب، واشتغل بالفلسفة واللاهوت.
وتنقل في البلدان، وانقطع في بعض الأديرة.
ونصب أسقفا على جوباس (من أعمال ملطية) سنة 1246 م.
وسمي «غريغوريوس» ثم كان أسقفا لليعاقبة في حلب.
وارتقى إلى رتبة «جاثليق» على كرسي المشرق سنة 1264 م (والجاثليق: رياسة رؤساء الكهنة السريانيين في بلاد المشرق، العراق وفارس وما إليهما، ويقال لصاحب هذه الرتبة عند رجال الكنيسة المفريان) وتوفي في مراغة (بأذربيجان) ونقلت جثته إلى الموصل فدفنت في دير مار متى.
وفي علماء الدين المسيحي من يشك في عقيدة ابن العبري وينسبه إلى أخذ مآخذ الحكماء واتباع آرائهم.
اشتهر بأبي الفرج تيمنا بهذه الكنية، ولم يكن له ولد، لأنه لم يتزوج.
له 35 مصنفا في علوم مختلفة، منها بالعربية «تاريخ الدول - ط» يعرف بمختصر الدول، انتهى به إلى سنة 1284 م، وآخر سماه «منافع أعضاء الجسد» وله «دفع الهم» في الادب والأخلاق، و «منتخب جامع المفردات للغافقي - ط» القسمان الاول والثاني منه، في الادوية المفردة، و «شرح المجسطي لبطليموس» ورسالة في «النفس البشرية - ط» و «شرح فصول أبقراط - خ» صغير، و «تحرير مسائل حنين بن إسحاق - خ» لم يتمه، وبالسريانية «ديوان شعر - ط» و «تفسير الكتاب المقدس» و «الهدايات» وكان بصيرا بالأرمنية ماهرا في الفارسية واليونانية والسريانية والفارسية
