من المعروف في أيامنا هذه أنه بإستطاعة الأهل والمربين أن يساعدوا أطفالهم ليكونوا قادرين على تحمل المسؤولية، وليحققوا سعادتهم في المستقبل. ولهذا يجب أن ندعم إهتمام الأطفال بممارسة اللعب، إذ إن اللعب يساهم بشكل فعال في تنمية بعض جوانب البناء النفسي للطفل، فلعب الطفل هو بمثابة "العمل"، وعلى الرغم من أن الأطفال في أيامنا هذه يتبعون برنامجاً تعليمياً محدداً من قبل الأهل والمدرسة، إلا أن هذا البرنامج لا يولي الأهمية الكافية لنشاط كاللعب. تكمن أهمية اللعب بالنسبة للطفل في تنمية خياله، حتى في حالة لعبه بمفرده، أما أثناء لعبه مع الآخرين فهو يتعلم مهارات التعارف وآليات حل المشكلات، وأي شكل من أشكال اللعب يساعدنا في التغلب على حالة الشرود لدى الأطفال. يرتبط اللعب في معظم الأحيان بطموحات وتطلعات الطفل اليومية، كما يدعم جوانب نفسية عند الطفل، إذ يحقق له إندفاعاً كبيراً قد ينسيه واقعه، وهذه الحالة تمنحه السعادة التي تتحقق بإحساسه بالإنجاز والنجاح الذي سيسعى الطفل في المستقبل إلى تكراره بأشكال شتى، مما سيجعله إنساناً ناجحاً في الحياة العملية. يشمل هذا الكتاب مجموعة واسعة من الألعاب، مصنفة حسب الهدف منها، فيبدأ بالألعاب الكلامية التي تقوّم لسان الطفل وتصححح مخارج الحروف لديه، ثم ينتقل إلى الألعاب اللغوية التي تمكّنه من حفظ الأحرف وتكوينها في كلمات ذات معنى ثم الألعاب الصوتية التي تدخل الطفل إلى عالم الأصوات المشوق ليتعلم شيئاً عن صفات الأصوات والتمييز بينها وتوظيفها في أساليب القراءة والمحادثة، ثم الألعاب الحسابية التي تطوّر المهارات العددية: والألعاب الموسيقية الفنية، بالإضافة إلى الألعاب الجماعية التي تنمي حس التعاون لدى الطفل، كألعاب الكرة والتتابعات والعراك، وأخيراً الألعاب المائية الممتعة كالسباحة والقوارب والصيد وغيرها.
