يتمثل الهدف الاساسي لهذا الكتاب في حصر وتقويم الدراسات المختلفة المتاحة حول مستقبل الوطن العربي، ومن ثم أهليتها لاستشراق مستقبل أو "مستقبلات بديلة" للتنمية. وفي الكتاب: تطرح المقدمة أهمية الدراسات المستقبلية وضرورتها ومفهومها، بينما يتضمن الفصل الأول، عرضاً لصور المستقبل العربي كما يمكن استخلاصها من خلال النماذج العالمية الرئيسية مع بيان طبيعة الافتراضات التي بنيت عليها الرؤية الدولية للمستقبل العربي وتحليل لمدى امكان الاعتماد على هذه الدراسات. أما الفصل الثاني فيتضمن قراءة نقدية لأهم الوئاثق الاستراتيجية المختلفة التي وضعتها المنظمات العربية المتخصصة في محاولة للتعرف إلى ما تحتويه هذه الوئائق من عناصر للرؤية الاستراتيجية الشاملة للمستقبل العربي. أما الفصل الثالث والأخير فيتضمن تحليلاً للأسباب الملحة التي تدعو لإجراء دراساتٍ مستقبليةٍ من نوع جديد وطرح لطبيعة المنهج الذي يجب أن يتبع في هذه الدراسات، وإبراز لأهمية أنجازها بواسطة الباحثين العرب فكرهم ليرسموا صورة المستقبل العربي وهم: ابراهيم سعد الدين، علي نصار، اسماعيل صبري عبد الله، ومحمود عبا الفضيل.
