بعد رحيل والدها عن هذه الدنيا أصبحت "حياة" واثنان من أخواتها في وصاية عمهما، وبحسب عادات وتقاليد مجتمع بدائي فإن ابنة العم هي لابن عمها، حتى لو كان هذا الأخير متغطرساً ولا وجود "للأخلاق والصدق عنده"، ولكن حياة كان قلبها في مكان آخر، فقد امتلكه "خالد" ذلك الشاب النبيل من أول نظرة، وإزداد هذا الحب مع الأيام، ولكن الرياح تجري بما لا تشتهي السفن. فقوانين المجتمع الذي تنتمي إليه حياة تحتم عليها الموافقة على الزواج من ابن عمها "علي" الذي أجبرت على الزواج منه على مبدأ (القسمة والنصيب)، بينما عاد خالداً إلى بلاده خائباً بعدما وصلت إليه رسالة من حياة تقول فيها "لقد دافعت عن حبي بكل قوتي ولكني لم أستطع التغلب على العادات والتقاليد، ولهذا فإن قدري وسوء حظي حرماني مما أريد.. ولكن أرجوك أن تثق بأن الحب في قلبي سيبقى لك إلى الأبد. فقد ملَكوه جسمي ولن يمتلك قلبي". لتنتهي الرواية بعودة حياة مطلقة وأم لثلاثة أولاد وهي تقول لأمها "بشري عمي يا أمي، ها قد وصلنا إلى نهاية الغلط، الذي أصر عمي على ارتكابه في حق اليتيمة، والله بيني وبينه".
