يتكون الكتاب من ستة فصول، بالإضافة إلى مقدمة المترجم، والتقسيم الزمني (محطات مهمة في تاريخ القصة القصيرة). يطل المؤلف من خلال الفصل الأول بنظرة عامة على القصة القصيرة، وتمهيد عام لمحتويات الكتاب، بدء من الأصول الأسطورية، والسرديات القصيرة من عصر النهضة إلى عصر الرومانطيقية، كما يتطرق إلى "إرفينغ" و"هوثورن" و"بو" وثم يناقش ظهور المدرسة الواقعية، وبدايات القصة القصيرة الحديثة. و"تشيخوف"، "مانسفيلد" و"جويس" ثم الفترة من "شيروود أندرسون" إلى الوقت الحاضر. الفصل الثاني يفصل الحديث عن بدايات القرن التاسع عشر، ثم يليه بدراسة الواقعية في القرن التاسع عشر في الفصل الثالث. بعدها يتحدث المؤلف عن الشكلية في أوائل القرن العشرين. ثم النهضة المعاصرة في الفصل الخامس. ثم يضم الفصل السادس مقالة بالمراجع. ويختتم الكتاب بعناوين يوصى بالرجوع إليها، ومعلومات أخرى عن الأعلام والمؤلفات. مؤلف الكتاب، تشارلز ماي، أستاذ اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة لونغ بيتش بولاية كاليفورنيا الأمريكية. وهو من أشهر من درس القصة القصيرة كنوع أدبي. أما المترجم الدكتور ناصر الحجيلان، الكاتب بصحيفة الرياض، هو أستاذ مساعد في قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها، وعميد شؤون المكتبات بجامعة الملك سعود، له العديد من المؤلفات والترجمات حو النقد والأدب
