هذا الكتاب يحاكي لغة كليلة ودمنة على ألسنة الحيوانات والطيور والجان كتبه الأمير مرزبان نجل أحد ملوك طبرستان من سلالة آل باوند. كتبه مؤلفه في أواخر القرن الرابع الهجري باللغة الطبرية وقيل كذلك أنه نقل عن نسخة قديمة سابقة لظهور الإسلام ولكن أحد فضلاء العراق نقله من اللغة "الطبرية" إلى الفارسية المتداولة في عصره وأضاف إليه أشعاراً وأمثالاً فارسية وعربية وذلك في أواخر القرن الرابع الهجري. وصدرت ترجمة أخرى لهذا الكتاب قام بها محمد بن غازي ملطيوي (نسبة إلى ملطية) بناء لطلب من أحد سلاجقة الروم وأضاف إليها كثيراً من الأشعار والشواهد العربية وسمى الكتاب "روضة العقول". وهذا الكتاب هو نسخة طبق الأصل عن طبعة هجرية قديمة يعود تاريخها إلى سنة 1287 هجرية كان قد نقلها مترجم آخر هو شهاب الدين أحمد بن محمد بن عرب شاه عن نسخة تركية مترجمة بدورها عن الأصل الفارسي.
