كانت رحلات ابن بطوطة بمثابة "تقرير" عن أحوال الأمة الإسلامية خلال القرن الثامن الهجري- الرابع عشر الميلادي- وقد أقدم الكثيرون على عرض هذا التقرير بوجوه متعددة، فمنهم من اختصره.. ومنهم من هذبه.. ومنهم من انتقى منه، وكل يؤكد لابن بطوطة فضله وقدرته.. أما تحقيق هذه الرحلات ووضعها في إطارها الجغرافي والتاريخي من بدايتها إلى نهايتها ثم دراستها جملة واحدة، وإظهار قيمتها لعالم الإسلام، فأمر لم يقدم عليه احد من قبل. كانت رحلات ابن بطوطة بمثابة "تقرير" عن أحوال الأمة الإسلامية خلال القرن الثامن الهجري- الرابع عشر الميلادي- وقد أقدم الكثيرون على عرض هذا التقرير بوجوه متعددة، فمنهم من اختصره.. ومنهم من هذبه.. ومنهم من انتقى منه، وكل يؤكد لابن بطوطة فضله وقدرته.. حمد بن عبد الله بن محمد اللواتي الطنجي المعروف بابن بَـطُّوطَة (ولد في 24 فبراير 1304 - 1377م بطنجة) (703 - 779هـ) هو رحالة ومؤرخ وقاض وفقيه مغربي لقب بأمير الرحالين المسلمين. وخرج من طنجة سنة 725 هـ فطاف بلاد المغرب ومصر والسودان والشام والحجاز وتهامة والعراق وفارس واليمن وعمان والبحرين وتركستان وما وراء النهر وبعض الهند والصين الجاوة وبلاد التتار وأواسط أفريقيا. وإتصل بكثير من الملوك والأمراء فمدحهم - وكان ينظم الشعر - واستعان بهباتهم على أسفاره. عاد إلى المغرب الأقصى، فانقطع إلى السلطان أبي عنان (من ملوك بني مرين) فأقام في بلاده. وأملى أخبار رحلته على محمد بن جزي الكلبي بمدينة فاس سنة 756 هـ وسماها تحفة النظار في غرائب الأمصار وعجائب الأسفار. ترجمت إلى اللغات البرتغالية والفرنسية والإنجليزية، ونشرت بها، وترجم فصول منها إلى الألمانية نشرت أيضا. كان يحسن التركية والفارسية. واستغرقت رحلته 27 سنة (1325-1352م) ومات في مراكش سنة 779 هـ/1377م حيث يوجد ضريحه بالمدينة القديمة. تلقبه جامعة كامبريدج في كتبها وأطالسها بأمير الرحالة المسلمين الوطنيين.
