إن أية دراسة للتراجيديا تصبح ناقصة إن لم تشر بشكل أو بآخر إلى الثلاثة الكبار الذين حملوا لواء التراجيديا حملا. أولهم ايسخولوس وآخرهم سوفوكليس وأخيرهم يوريبيديس. فان أولهم يمثل فجر المسرح الاغريقى، والثانى يمثل ظهره، والثالث هو عصره. والثلاثة جميعا يشبهون فى كثير من الوجوه ثالوث الفلسفة الاغريقية: سقراط وأفلاطون وأرسطو. ويعنى هذا من بعض الوجوه أن لدراسة الدراما الاغريقية أهمية كبرى عند المهتمين بالأدب بعامه، وأدب المسرح بنوع خاص، لما لها من أصالة وجذور عميقة تمتد بها عبر التاريخ.
ولا يقف الأمر عند هذا الحد من ضرورة الوقوف عند الأصول الأولى للأدب المسرحى من الجانب الابداعى، بل يتعداه إلى الجانب النقدى. واذا كان تحليل أعمال الرواد الأول أمراً لازماً. فان معرفة الأسس البنائية والقواعد الفنية التى أرسى دعائمها الفيلسوف اليونانى الأكبر "أرسطو" تصبح بالتالى أكثر أهمية وحتمية. ذلك أن أرسطو فى الحقيقة هو أول من درس التراث اليونانى الرائد فى هذا الفن، وحلله تحليلاً علمياً دقيقاً، واستبطن أهدافه وعلله الغائية، فى ضوء مطالب الجماهير. وهو أول من حدد مقومات هذا الفن، وأهمية كل منها. وقد شرح ذلك كله فى كتابه (فن الشعر) الذى أصبح حجر الزاوية فى فلسفة الانشاء التراجيدى. فما كل ما كتب عن أصول التراجيديا فى الألفى سنة الأخيرة إلا بمثابة هوامش وتعليقات وتفريعات من كتاب أرسطو، أو بمثابة رد ودحض وهدم للأسس التى بنى عليها فكرة المأساة. وعلى هذا النحو يكاد كتاب "فن الشعر" لأرسطو أن يكون من أشد المؤلفات الأرسطية صلة بحياتنا الفكرية. فليس هو بالكتاب الذى يدرس كما تدرس التحفة الأثرية، تنحصر قيمتها فى موقعها من التاريخ، بل هو كتاب يدرس لأن المسائل التى يثيرها فى موضوع التراجيديا والكوميديا وشعر الملاحم، ما تزال مسائل قائمة تدب فيها الحياة.
