ما زلت أسمع مذ أن كنت طفلاً صغيراً عن حياة الحاج سلمان بن مطر، رجل العطاء والبذل والإحسان، الذي طبقت شهرته الآفاق، وكم تمنيت أن أكون مثله في عطائه وبذله وإحسانه وجوده، وأذكر أنه في مرة من المرات كنت جالساً بالقرب من جدتي الحاجة لطيفة بنت حسين بن علي الحادي رحمها الله تعالى وقد كانت تحدثني عن أيام زمان، ومما أخبرتني أنه في إحدى السنوات أصاب الناس فاقة شديدة وكان أبرز المساعدين للأهالي هو الحاج سلمان بن مطر حيث كان يوزع عليهم الرطب بالمجان.
بعدها نشط عزمي في البحث عن سيرة هذا الرجل، وساقني القدر إلى العم إبراهيم بن خليفة بن إبراهيم بن سليمان بن مطر تاجر اللؤلؤ المشهور ونجل حفيد الحاج سلمان بن مطر، وبعد أن قابلني بوجهه البشوش وطلعته البهية، شرحت له عزمي على الكتابة عن حياة الحاج سلمان فرحت بذلك وأتحفني بمجموعة كبيرة من الوثائق كان لها أكبر الأثر في إنجاز هذا العمل، فانتقيت منها أحسنها ورتبتها كل وثيقة حسب موضوعها. إضافة إلى ذلك فقد قابلت بعض كبار السن ممن عاصروا الحاج سلمان وأدركوا السنوات الأخيرة من حياته كالحاج حسن بن أحمد البوعينين وغيره.
