لقي الإمبراطور قسطنطين الحادي عشر حتفه في المعارك ضدّ الغزاة العثمانيين في القسطنطينية في العام 1453 ولم يُعثر على جثمانه أبداً. تقول الأسطورة إنه هرب على متن سفينة كم جنوة، ونجا من موت محقق على أيدي الأتراك، وكسب لنفسه لقب الإمبراطور الخالد. بعد خمسة قرون من اختفائه، اتصل ثلاثة رجال غامضين بأستاذ شاب يعيش في إسطنبول. كانوا أعضاء في فرقة سّرية، وقد حافظوا على وصية الإمبراطور الخالد طوال أجيال. أخبروه أنه الإمبراطور البيزنطي التالي، ولكي يستحوذ على ثروته ينبغي له أن ينفّذ آخر رغبة لدى سلفه. شرع الأستاذ في رحلة خطيرة أخذته إلى قلب لغز ذي أهمية تاريخية ملحمية. سلطان بيزنطة تجمع بين القصة والتاريخ، وفيها تقدير للحضارة البيزنطية. من أجواء سلطان بيزنطة نقرأ: عندما قال قسطنطين الحادي عشر: احرقوا قصر الدوق، لم يمنحنا 500 عام لنفعل هذا، وافترض أن أحد أحفاده سينفّذ المهمة حين كانت البندقية لا تزال دولة، لكن أفراد سلالته لم يتمكنوا من إنجاز مهمتهم. في الوقت نفسه، فقد ورثة البندقية روحهم بالاستسلام أولاً إلى فرنسا عام 1797، ولاحقاً إلى النمسا. وعام 1866 انضمت البندقية إلى إيطاليا ليس كدولة، وإنما كمدينة. وبدلاً من الدوق، حصلت على حاكم. أخيراً، أصبح قصرها الذي يبدو مثل حمّام بيزنطي متحفاً من الدرجة الثانية، لذا كانت البندقية نفسها هي التي نفّذت البند الأخير من وصية قسطنطين الحادي عشر. وبعد عام 1866 سيكون أي عمل آخر - برأيي - مرادفاً لإخراج جثة من قبر وإطلاق النار عليها (...) باختصار، لقد تحققت رغبة قسطنطين الحادي عشر الأخيرة بالقتل الرحيم للدوقية، ورغم هذا، أنقذ أحد أحفاده البعيدين، بحل شيفرة وصيته عام 2009 روح الإمبراطور من العذاب...
