ولد جون بوكان فى بيرث،باسكتلندا عام 1875 ومات فى مونتريال بكندا عام 1940، كان رجل دولة وكاتبا مشهورا بقصصة عن المغامرت سريعة الخطوة، وكتبة الخمسون كتبها كلها فى وقت فراغة،بينما كان يلعب دورا نشطا فى السياسة والدبلوماسية والنشر المتضمن الكثير من السير والروايات التاريخية.
كان ابنا لرجل دين، تعلم فى جامعتى جلاسجو واكسفورد، حيث بدأ ينشر اعمالة القصصية والتاريخيةو وعمل مع المندوب السامى البريطانى فى جنوب افريقيا (1901-1903) ولقد استخدم خبرتة الافريقية بشكل جيد فى رومانسيتة (بريسترجون) (1910) تنبأ فيها عن صحوة افريقيا ، وعند عودنة الى لندن عمل مديرا لدار نلسون للنشر، حيث كتب لها اعظم رواياتةو أثناء الحرب العالمية الاولى عمل بالحكومة، وفى عام 1917 اصبح مديرا للمخابرات البريطانية ، وبعد الحرب اصبح بوكان مديرا لوكالة رويدر للاخبار، وعضوا فى البرلمان عن الجامعات الاسكتلندية، وكتبة فى السير مونتروز(1928)، سير والتر سكوت(1932) معروفة بالفهم الذكى للتاريخ والادب الاسكتلندى، وفى عام (1935) انعم علية بلقب لورد(تويد سموير الاول)ن وعين حاكما عاما لكندا حتى وفاتة

تأتي رواية "الدرجات التسع والثلاثون" للكاتب الاسكتلندي "جون بوكان" من ضمن سلسلة روائع القصص العالمية بعد ترجمتها عن النص الإنكليزي إلى اللغة العربية، وجاءت هذه السلسلة باللغتين العربية والانكليزية بهدف تمكين طالب المعرفة من هذه اللغة قراءة وكتابة وفهماً ومحادثة، إضافة إلى ملحق أسئلة وتدريبات تعين الطالب على عملية الفهم والاستيعاب الصحيح فيما يخص اللغتين العربية والانكليزية في آن.
تعتبر رواية "الدرجات التسع والثلاثون" قصة مغامرات مثيرة وأول قصة من سلسلة التحري السري التي كان بطلها السيد المهذب "ريتشارد هاناي" والتي ظهرت في العام 1935 فيلماً سينمائياً لمخرج الإثارة والتشويق "الفرد هيتشكوك"، ويمكن القول أنها مهدت لظهور شخصية "جيمس بوند" الشهيرة للكاتب أيان فليمنج. وبالعودة إلى الرواية نجد أنها تتحدث عن شاب غريب يلتقي إمرأة غريبة في صالة رقص وهي تبحث عن مأوى، فيوافق الشاب على إيوائها في منزله. غير أنه حين يصحو في صباح اليوم التالي يعثر عليها ميتة في صالون المنزل.. لكنها فيما تلفظ أنفاسها الأخيرة تسرَ إليه باسم مكان ما في اسكتولندا، وعندما تكتشف الجريمة يتهم الشاب بقتلها، لكنه يتمكن من الفرار متوجهاً إلى ذلك المكان الذي أشارت إليه المرأة، وعندما يصل إلى المكان المحدد يكتشف أنه وكراً لجمعية سرية تضم جماعة من الجواسيس الذي يعملون لمصلحة أعداء انكلترا –فيكتشفون وجود الشاب وتبدأ عملية المطاردة، فيهرب وخلال عملية الهرب، يجد الشاب نفسه في حافلة قطار ويتعرف إلى فتاة تعرض عليه المساعدة.
فهل سيتمكن "هاناي" أن يكتشف اللغز ويكشف السر، أم سيتمكن الجواسيس من قتله؟؟
أحداث مثيرة، ومحطات كثيرة تنتظرنا تحمل معها مفاجآت تحبس الأنفاس ونحن نلاحق البطل في قصة البحث عن الحقيقة...!!
