بين جدّة والقدس، يعيش البطل التمزّق في الإنتماء، هل ينتمي إلى جدّة حيث وُلد وعاش، أم إلى القدس التي ربّاه أهله على أنها وطنه؟ وما يزيد بؤس هذا التمزّق هو أنه غير مقبول لا هنا ولا هناك.
الحكومة الإسرائيلية تسقط عنه حقّه في العيش في القدس لأنه مهاجر، فلا يستطيع العودة حتى لو شاء، وفي جدّة لا يستطيع الحصول على الجنسيّة ولا على حقوق العيش كمواطن حتى لو اختارها كوطن.
"ربما لم أفهم معنى أن يعش الواحد بعيداً عن وطنه، من دون أمل بالعودة إليه، فلا يستطيع أن يُخرج المفتاح المخبّأ في خزانته، مفتاح داره التي تركها في فلسطين، والتي ربما يسكنها غيره الآن، أو صارت جزءاً من مستوطنة صهيونية، فأصبح صغار السِكْناجِ يلعبون في حديقتها.
وصارت شجرة الزيتون، التي غرسها ورعاها بعرقه ويديه، المكان المفضّل كي تقيم تحتها طالبات يهوديّات حفلهنّ الخيري كل موسوم.
ربما لم أكن متألّماً بما يكفي لأشعر بمثل ما شعر به أهلي، لكني جرّبت الحنين إلى الأرض التي احتضنتني وذقت لوعة البعد عنها، كانت كأس الأشهر الثلاثة مترعة بالوجع والقلق، وربما الخوف من عدم العودة".
