"شنغهاي بيبي" حفر في الأنوثة يقترب من لغة الجسد والروح معاً، تقحم من خلاله "وي هيوي" المحذور اجتماعياً وخلقياً. تثمل هذه الرواية سيرة ذاتية، لفتاة جامعية، عانت الكبت بكل صوره، وأعمال السخرية الجماعية والتدريبات العسكرية للدفاع عن البرولتياريا، فالكاتبة واكبت أيام الفوضى وهدر حقوق الإنسان، إبان الثورة الثقافية التي أطلقها زعيم الصين الراحل ماوتسي تونغ عام 1966 والتي لم يسلم منها حتى تمثال بوذا، وفي ظل هكذا ظروف شهدت الفتاة تفتح جسدها، وتبرعم الإثارة والتهشي فكتبت (شنغهاي بيبي) وأكثرت في الدق على الأوتار الحساسة في الجسد الأنساني وتناولته بانفلات واضح، الأمر الذي عرضها للنقد الشديد، أما هي الروائية فتشبه روايتها هذه بنوع من السيرة الذاتية حول الرغبة الروحية والجنسية تقول: لقد ترعرت في وسط عائلي محافظ وصارم، وقد قضيت عامي الأول في الجامعة في تدريبات عسكرية وما حدث لي بعد ذلك كان رد فعل طبيعي جداً، لقد ثرت وتمردت وتحولت إلى الجموح الشديد، وهذا ما كتبت عنه".
