يشكل فقدان الوالدين وموتهما آلاماً مبرحة للشباب، وخصوصا أنهم في عمر يحتاجون فيه إلى الرعاية والإهتمام والدفء العائلي. في هذه الرواية يتوجه الدكتور "طارق البكري" إلى اليافعين يعلمهم كيف يتغلبون على آلامهم ويحولون انكسارهم إلى نجاحات. زياد شاب في عمر الزهور يفقد والديه بحادث سيارة، ونتيجة هذه الحادثة يولد في نفسه إحساساًً بالذنب لا ينقطع، والسبب، كما يحدث نفسه: "ربما لو كان معهما لما انقلبت السيارة التي كانا يستقلانها .. ربما لو قادها بنفسه لما انحرفت عن الطريق وسقطت في الوادي .. كان يعرف أن بصر والده في الفترة الأخيرة أصبح ضعيفا .. وخصوصاً في عتمة ليل لم يزره قمر .. وعظمه وهن، ولم يعد قوياً مثل السابق ( ... )" وبعد موتهما رضي زياد بقضاء الله وقدره .. لكنه لم يستطع التملص من آلامه، فأصبح القمر نديماً له يبث إليه حزنه.
