هذا الكتاب درس الطرق الصوفية بمختلف مذاهبها ذلك لأنه ينقسم الى قسمين قسم نظري مأخوذ عن الكتاب والسنة وآراء علماء الأمة الإسلامية، والقسم الآخر دراسة مسيحية حقلية، استمر فيها الباحث أكثر من ست سنوات يتدارس طريقة طريقة من الطرق الصوفية المنتشرة في العالم العربي كالجيلانية والرفاعية والشاذلية والأحمدية باعتبار أصحابها الرواد الأوائل للتصوف الإسلامي. وقد انبثقت منها طرق فرعية أخذ أصحابها عن الأصل وأزاد من أزاد من الأوراد والسلوكيات والمواجد والتصوف الذي نقصده هو التصوف الإسلامي السني الذي لم نجد فيه إتهامات المستشرقين من أنه امتداد للمستسيزم المسيحي الذي ينادي بوحدة الوجود أو إيصالها الناسوت باللاهوت حتى يصبح الرب والعبد شيء واحد فالتصوف لإسلامي لسني يفرق بين الرب والعبد باعتبار أن العبد فقير الله وهو الغني وأن العبد محتاج والله هو الجواد وأن العبد ضعيف والله هو القوي. فليس التصوف الإسلامي السني ينادي بوحدة الوجود إنما بوحدة المشهود، ويهتم بتربية النفس وتأديبها ومحاسبتها ومراقبتها ومعرفتها وله باع عريض في علم النفس وفهم النفس.
