إن الصورة هي في المقام الأول أداة تعبيرية، ولا تختلف في ذلك عن باقي أدوات التمثيل الرمزي التي يتوفر عليها الإنسان، ولكنها لا يمكن أن تنفصل أيضاً عن كل العمليات التي تقود إلى إستنساخ واقع أو إعادة إنتاجه أو التمويه عليه من خلال المضاف التقني، بما فيها صناعة المشهد والوضعة وزاوية الرؤية، بل قد يصل بها الوهم إلى التصريح بإمكانية إستعادة هذا الواقع كما هو، إستناداً إلى رؤية "وفية"، كما ألحت على ذلك كل التيارات "الواقعية" التي جاهدت لكي تجعل الصورة أداة للتعبير عن واقع - كما تراه - وترويضه وتوجيهه وفق غايات أيديولوجية مسبقة... فالكتاب يتوقف عند قضايا تبدو تقنية في الظاهر، لكنها تحيل في العمق على التصورات التي صاغتها الثقافة حول الفضاء والزمان والأشكال والألوان والخطوط، وكل العناصر التي تستعيدها الصورة من أجل بناء عوالمها الدلالية. فالمعنى في الصورة، وفي كل الأدوات التعبيرية البصرية يستند إلى معرفة سابقة، هي الدلالات التي منحتها الثقافة للأشياء وهيئات الإنسان وكذا عوالم التشكيل. إن الأمر يتعلق بدلالات مكتسبة تجاهد الصورة إنتشالها، من خلال التمثيل التشخيصي، من بنيتها الأصلية وإدراجها ضمن بنية أخرى تمنحها خصوصية وتغني من أبعادها.
