لعبت النبوءات في الأزمة القديمة دوراً كبيراً في بلاد ما بين النهرين، واهتم الكهنة بتلك التنبوءات وقد إعتمد الكهنة العارفين في نبوءاتهم على الزيت والدخان وأكباد الحيوانات وتقلبات الطبيعية، بطبيعة الحال، ان أي حدث غريب في الطبيعية كان يعد أما نذير شؤم أو فأل حسن، ولأجل تسهيل عملية تفسير معاني تلك المعجزات في الطبيعة صنفوا الأحداث الغربية في الطبيعة في قوائم، وقد ضمت إحدى تلك القوائم التي يطلق عليها إسم (سوما أزبو Summa Isbu) والتي كانت محفوظة في مكتبة (آشور بانيبال) الفين نبوءة خطت على أربعة وعشرين لوحاً.
كما استنبطت بعض النبوءات في الولادات الشاذة للكائنات سواء كانت على هيئة بشر أو حيوان. وتعود قوائم (سوما أزبو) التي تدل على نذير نحس إلى الحقبة البابلية القديمة وبالتحديد في عهد (بوغازكوي)، قد سطرت باللغات الأكدية والحيثية والحورية والأوغارثية.
والمادة التي بين أيدينا الآن من صنفين: تقارير تتعلق بإكتشاف مخلوقات مسخ ووثائق ذات علاقة بطرد الشرور الناجمة عن ذلك المخلوق المسخ، ويتضمن الصنف الأول من تقارير ووسائل أما الصنف الثاني فيتضمن طقوس وأدعية.
