مع الإنطلاقة الخيرة التي برزت خلال العشر سنوات الأخيرة لمواكبة حركة التطوير التربوي لبرامج إعداد وتأهيل المعلم أثناء الخدمة وتحسين كفاياته وتوفير الفرص المناسبة له للالتحاق بالدراسة الجامعية، ومع الاهتمام المتنامي بتطوير مناهج العلوم ومقرراتها لمراحل التعليم المختلفة في المملكة الأردنية على وجه خاص، وفي الدول العربية بصورة أكثر عمومية، وفي ضوء حاجة المكتبة العربية إلى مرجع ومؤلف حديث لمبحث الجيولوجيا، فقد برزت الحاجة الماسة والأهمية البالغة لتأليف هذا الكتاب. واستناداً إلى ما سبق ذكره فإن هناك إحساس عميق لدى المهتمين بمبحث الجيولوجيا بضرورة تأليف كتاب ومرجع علمي يؤمل منه تحقيق جملة من الأهداف، ومنها ما يلي:- إغناء المكتبة العربية بكتاب حديث في ميدان الجيولوجيا لسد النقص إذا وجد فيها. توفير كتاب جامعي يتناول المفاهيم والمبادئ الأساسية في مجال الجيولوجيا بطريقة سهلة مبسطة ويتطلب عرضها بأسلوب شيق وبالاستعانة بالصور والرسومات المناسبة، وعليه فإن هذا الكتاب يصلح للطالب الجامعي الذي يختار مبحث الجيولوجيا كمتطلب جامعي أو حر، وغالباً يصلح الكتاب لطلبة الكليات الإنسانية أو طلبة كليات الزراعة والهندسة والصيدلة. تزويد معلمي العلوم عموماً في مراحل التعليم الثلاث: الابتدائية والإعدادية والثانوية بمرجع مرشد يعودون إليه عند الحاجة أثناء تدريس الجيولوجيا حسب المناهج والمقررات الدراسية لصفوف هذه المراحل. توفير مرجع للطالب المبتدئ المتخصص في دراسة الجيولوجيا لعله يساعده على فهم المبادئ والمفاهيم الأساسية التي تمكنه من التعمق فيها في ميدان تخصصه الرئيس. ولقد كان لكتاب أساسيات علم الجيولوجيا لمؤلفيه الدكتور محمد يوسف حسن والزملاء الآخرين، خير معين لي في مهمتي تأليف هذا الكتاب، فالشكر والتقدير لهم جميعاً.
