يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن نظرية الشعر عند الجاحظ حيث تكون البحث من (التمهيد ) الذي اجتهد في تحديد (مفهوم النظرية ) ،بوصفه مفهوما يدخل في صلب العملية البحثية وجوهرها ، وذهب الفصل الاول الى مقاربة ( مفهوم الشعر ) عند الجاحظ . ومن ثم توجه المبحث اللاحق الى كشف حدود التجنيس في (بين الشعر والنثر : حدود التجنيس ) . واتى هذا الفصل ايضا على تعيين (وظيفة الشعر ) . وجاء الفصل الثاني بعنوان (بناء الشعر :المكونات والتشكيل ) . وقارب الفصل الثالث الموسوم ب (الشعر والآخر : الاحالة والتلقي ) جزءا مهما آخر من نظرية الشعر عند الجاحظ ، وناقش الكتاب في فصوله الاخرى مواضيع اخرى شتى .
