شمائل رسول الله (ص) فن صنف الناس فيه قديمًا وحديثًَا كتبًا كثيرة؛ فقد كان أحد أغراض كتب الحديث التي تهتم في المقام الأول بأحوال الرسول (ص) العملية؛ في العبادة والمعاملة، باعتباره الأسوة الحسنة التي نقتدي بهـا، ولذا نراهـم أفردوا الحديـث عن شمائلـه بكتب مستقلة، ومنهـم ابن كثير الـذي كـان تعويله على كتـاب شمائـل الترمذي، ثم أضاف إليه ما ورد في كتب الصحاح والمسانيد مما لا يستغني عنه المحدِّث والفقيه. وما أورده ابن كثير في هذا الكتاب يعد أوفى ما يمكن جمعه في هذا الغرض؛ فهو لم يترك جانبًا مما ورد في كتب الحديث عن شمائل الرسول (ص) إلا ذكره، ورتب ذلك، فجمع بين بذل الوسع ودقة الترتيب وحُسنه.
