الكتاب غيض من فيض، كما يُقال، فعدد الشعراء هنا عشرة، والشواعر أربع، من مئات الشعراء في القرن التاسع عشر، والقصائد هي ستون من عشرات الألوف في ذلك الحين. كان للثورة الفرنسية وثورة آذار (مارس) 1848 الألمانية تأثير كبير على شعراء ذلك العصر، وخصوصاً الشواعر اللائي حيث انقسمن إلى طائفتين، الطائفة المنعمة منهن قبل الثورة، وكن من طبقة النبلاء، مثل أنيتا فون دروسته-هولسهوف التي اعتزلت العالم في ضيعتها التي ورثتها وعاشت حياة مسرة وعزلة، فنظمت في وصف الطبيعة وأمعنت في الخيال وكأن ما كان يجري حولها في ألمانيا من حرب أهلية ليس بذي شأن. أما الشعراء، فكان بعضهم كغوته ينعم بالرفاهية، بينما كان هاينه وهولدرلين في فقر وعوز. ذكرت نبذة قصيرة عن حياة كل شاعر ليتسنى للقارئ الكريم معرفة الظروف التي عاشها وتأثيرها على شعره.
