لعلّ ”حكاية جريدة المدينة“ تعكس، وربما تلخّص، حكاية الصحافة في المملكة العربية السعودية برمّتها، بدءاً من لحظة المخاض، مروراً بكافة العوائق والصعوبات التي رافقتها، وصولاً إلى ما هي عليه اليوم. عبر سردٍ حكائي، هو أقرب إلى الرواية الشفوية، يسير بنا الكاتب في الدرب الطويل والعسير الذي خاضه بعض الهواة، مدفوعين بحميّة وحماسة وشغف الشباب، من أجل إصدار أول جريدة في المدينة المنورة، حيث يروي الأدوار التي مرّت بها جريدة المدينة مذ كانت فكرة تطوف في الأذهان حتى أصبحت صفحات مطبوعة تؤلَّف وتنضَّد وتُطبع ثم تُقرأ بعد ذلك. ورغم أن الكتاب مخصّص لحكاية جريدة المدينة، لكن الكاتب يتطرّق أيضاً إلى الصحافة في العهدين العثماني والهاشمي، السابقين على العهد السعودي؛ وكذلك إلى الأدب في تلك العهود، والعلاقة فيما بين الصحافة والأدب.
