كانت حياة (لاين) المصرية توطئة للعمل الكبير العظيم الذي وضع نصب عينيه تحقيقه، ألا وهو تعريف العالم بالمصريين كما لم يعهد ذلك من قبل، فجاب طوافاً رحالاً طيلة سنوات ثلاث في طول مصر وعرضها متنقلاً بين الإسكندرية والقاهرة، متسلقاً الأهرامات وماخراً عباب النيل، وعاد إلى إنكلترة قبل انتهاء عام 1828، متأبطاً كتابه (في وصف مصر) Description Of Egypt في رحلته الناجزة مرفقاً برسوم اختطتها ريشته، ولكن (لاين) لم يفلح في إيجاد الناشر الذي يجازف في نشر هذا الكتاب متحملاً كافة تكاليفه. وارتأي (لاين) زيارة ثانية إلى مصر طمعاً في إمكانية تحسين مؤلفه، فعاد إلى أرض الكنانة عام 1833 وقبع فيها مدة سنتين اكتسب خلالهما معرفة أكبر ونظرة أعمق وأشمل، فكان وليده الجديد كتاب (عادات المصريين المحدثين وتقاليدهم) The manners and customs Of The Modern Egyptians الذي صدر عام 1836 في جزءين عن (مكتبات المعرفة الممتعة) وأرفقه بكليشيهات خشبية رائعة رسمها المؤلف بنفسه، حقق الكتاب نجاحاً سريعاً باهراً، وراح الجميع يتحدث عن دقته ووضوحه وتماميته، وتميز بأنه (أفضل ما كتب في وصف شعب)، ويبقى كتاب (لاين) حتى أيامنا المقياس الأول الرئيسي في ما يتعلق بمضونه.
