يتناول هذا الكتاب تجربة وأفكار بيتر دركر الذي أبدع مفهوم الإدارة كمبدأ فكري وعملي، ومد الجسور بين أربعة عوالم هي التعليم الأكاديمي، والصحافة، والاستشارة، والتاريخ الاجتماعي والاقتصادي. وأوجد بين المذاهب ذات الأهمية الكبيرة مزيجًا لا مثيل له من الدقة والعمق الفكري، إذ إن الفضل في كثير من الأفكار الاقتصادية والإدارية التي أثرت وما زالت تؤثر على المدراء الذين يمارسون الإدارة نظريًّا أو عمليًّا في الوقت الحاضر يعود إلى عمل درَكر. تتضمن هذه الأفكار الطرق الرئيسية المستخدمة، ولا سيما منها مبدأ الإدارة بالأهداف وتطبيقاته، لزيادة فعالية الشركة المتفرعة والمدراء أيضًا. والسفر الذي كتبه دركر في إدارة وتحقيق الإبداع هو بحد ذاته مثلاً على فكرة الإبداع التي أضحت عاملاً حاسمًا في "مجتمع المعرفة" الذي كان دركر أول من أعطاه تعريفًا وتوضيحًا (سنة 1969) ذلك أن قوة دركر العظمى تكمن في قدرته على قراءة الحاضر، وعلى إحراز قصب السبق قبل أي أحد آخر إلى رؤية ما يجري بصورة حقيقية في المجتمع والاقتصاد والشركات.
