الزراعة: هي عملية إنتاج الغذاء، العلف، والأليف وسلع أخرى عن طريق التربية النظامية للنبات والحيوان، قديماً كانت كلمة زراعة تعني "علْمُ فلاحة الأراضي" فقط ولكن كلمة زراعة الآن تغطي كل الأنشطة الأساسية لإنتاج الغذاء والعلف والألياف، شاملة في ذلك كل التقنيات المطلوبة لتربية ومعالجة الماشية والدواجن.
وكانت التطورات الزراعية عوامل شديدة الأهمية في التغير الإجتماعي، ولقد شهد القرن العشرون تغييرات ضخمة في الممارسات الزراعية، خصوصاً في مجال الكيمياء الزراعية، الكيمياء الزراعية تتضمن تطبيقات الأسمدة الكيميائية، المبيدات الحشرية الكيميائية، المبيدات الفطرية الكيميائية، تركيب التربة، تحليل المنتجات الزراعية، والإحتياجات الغذائية لحيوانات المزرعة، بداية من العالم الغربي، وقامت الثورة الخضراء بنشر الكثير من هذه التغييرات إلى المزارع حول العالم، بنسب نجاح مختلفة.
كذلك تطور علم البيطرة (فرع من العلوم الطبية) يعني بالوقاية والعلاج أو تخفيف الألم من أمراض وإصابات الحيوانات، وهو يشمل علم التشريح المجهري والتشريح والكيمياء وعلم الجراثيم وعلم الطفيليات وعلم الأمراض وعلم العقاقير وعلم وظائف الأعضاء (التشريح) في الحيوان، ويساعد الأطباء البيطرين على حماية الإنسان من أكثر من 100 مرض حيواني التي يمكن إنتقالها إلى الإنسان.
ولأهمية الزراعة والبيطرة في حياة الإنسان والمجتمعات، وضعت المؤلفة معجم "مصطلحات في علم الزراعة والبيطرة" جمعت فيه العديد من تلك المصطلحات مع شروح مختصرة لكل مصطلح، مستنداً بذلك على العديد من الكتب والدراسات والبحوث القيّمة التي قام بإعدادها بحّاثة عرب ومختصين في هذين المجالين، كما أستعين بباحثين أجانب أو بمصادر أجنبية عند الضرورة بطريق الترجمة.
