قبل ثلاث مائة عام وبالتحديد في 13 نيسان 1695 توفي واحد من أكبر الكتاب الفرنسيين في القرآن السابع عشر. لقد كتب القصائد والأغاني والمسرحيات والأساطير والقصص وألف الأوبرا وترجم العديد من الكتب إلى اللغة الفرنسية من اللغات الأخرى، ولكن الأجيال من بعده لم تحتفظ إلا بحكاياته التي سردها على ألسنة الحيوانات والتي لاقت نجاحاً كبيراً. ويتعلم الصغار حالياً في كافة أنحاء العالم هذه القصص القصيرة ذات النقد الاجتماعي اللاذع والتي تدعو إلى الأخلاق الحميدة. تحثنا حكايات لافونتين الممتعة على التفكير بالحياة الناس, ولهذا السبب فإنها لا تزال تلاقي رواجاً كبيراً لدى القارئ المعاصر. لقد كتب لافونتين 240 حكاية يساهم التعمق بها في توضيح تعابير رجال السياسة في وقتنا الحاضر وفهم عدد كبير من الشعارات الإعلانية الحديثة. لقد بحث هذا الكاتب الأخلاقي الكبير صاحب الموهبة الفذة عن أساطير الحضارات الأخرى لكتابة حكاياته. فقد استقى الكثير منها في كتابه الأول من حكايات أيسوب وفيدروس. أما كتابه الثاني فقد استقى معظم قصصه من "مصادر شرقية" ولاسيما من كتاب "كليلة ودمنة". والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يضم بين طياته مجموعة من النصوص التي دونها دي لافونتين بلغتها الأصلية الفرنسية وما يقابلها من مص عربي كان ابن المقفع قد كتبه باللغة العربية، والذي استقى منه لافونتين حكايات قصة أما اللوحات المبثوثة في هذه النسخة فهي عبارة عن رسومات تم تقديمها في معارض نظمت تحت عنوان "صباح الخير سيد لافونتين" وذلك في عدة بلدان من العالم وما يمز هذا اللوحات أنها قد جاءت تارة مجسدة للنص الشرفي الذي أعده ابن المقفع وتارة مجسدة للنص الفرنسي وبطريقة عشوائية.
