هذا هو الكتاب الأول للباحث الأستاذ عبد الله خميس بن سنكر، وهو في الأصل بحث للتخرج في مرحلة البكالوريوس، من كلية اللغة العربية بالرياض -جامعة الإمام محمد بن سعود الإسلامية.
وسيلاحظ القارئ أن هذا الكتاب النقدي فيه: القراءة المستوعبة، والإحاطة، وحسن التأتي، والقدرة على التأويل والموازنة وإصدار الأحكام. وهذه هي مهمة الناقد الأدبي المتمكن، القادر على فهم العمل المنقود.
وهذا العمل النقدي موازنة بين عملين أدبيين يحملان الاسم ذاته (على أسوار دمشق) لأديبين راحلين من كبار أدباء الإسلام في العصر الحديث هما: علي أحمد باكثير (1910-1969م) ونجيب الكيلاني (1931-1995م).
وتدور المسرحية الأولى حول الفتح الإسلامي لمدينة دمشق في عهد الخليفة الراشد عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، بينما تدور المسرحية الثانية حول مقاومة المسلمين للتتار ما بين عامي (699-702هـ) حين "هب إعصار التتار من الشرق... دامياً رهيباً، فلم يرحم إنسانية، ولم يوقر مدنية، بل كانت صناعته الموت، وبضاعته الدم، وغايته النصر الأعمى الذي يخوض إليه الحروب البشعة".
وقد قدم الناقد في كتابه عرضاً موجزاً للمسرحيتين، ثم القضايا الرئيسة والقضايا الفرعية، ثم درس الشخصيات، والصراع، والحوار، والبناء، دراسة متأنية. ولم تمنعه شهرة الكاتبين من نقدهما.
وقد توصل في نهاية دراسته إلى نتيجة طال اختلاف النقاد حولها، وهي العلاقة بين وقائع الفن وحقائق التاريخ.
وقد حاول أن يكون منصفاً في أحكامه من خلال إبراز جماليات العملين اللذين تعرض لهما، ولم يقع في أسر كتابات الدارسين السابقين، مما يشي بمستقبله المنشود في النقد.
