تفتقر المكتبة العربية إلى مؤلفات تغطي مواضيع الأتمتة الإنتاجية وتطبيقاتها الصناعية والزراعية والصحية وفي المجالات الأخرى. فمع انتشار الثورة الصناعية وازدياد الطلب على المنتجات وازدياد المنافسة ومتطلبات العمليات الإنتاجية الحديثة أخذ الإنسان يبحث عن وسائل تمكنه من تسريع العملية الإنتاجية وتقليل التكاليف والجهود فظهرت المكننة ومع مرور الزمن نشأت الحاجة إلى الاستعاضة عن بعض الأيدي العاملة وإلى ربط الخطوط الإنتاجية داخلياً وخارجياً بمجموعة معدات وتجهيزات فأدى ذلك غلى نشوء مفهوم الأتمتة.
والكتاب هذا يتوخى التعريف بتقنيات حديثة ويسعى لأن يكون دليلاً ومرشداً وموضحاً للمبادئ الأساسية للمجالات التقنية. ويقع الكتاب في ثلاثة عشر فصلاً الفصول الثلاثة الأولى مقدمة للتعريف بالأتمتة ومكننة الإنتاج وخصائص المكننة والأتمتة والمتطلبات التقنية والاقتصادية للمكننة والأتمتة. ويحدد الفصل الرابع الميزات الاقتصادية لعملية الأتمتة فيما بين الفصلان الخامس والسادس عملية الأتمتة والمكننة الإنتاجية ووسائل أتمتة التحكم والفحص مثل تجهيزات التحسس وأجهزة تهيئة وتكييف الإشارة وآليات المؤازرة.
ويتناول الفصل السابع أنظمة التحكيم الآلي حيث يبين أنواعها وأساليبها في حين يتناول في الفصل الثامن أتمتة آلات قطع المعادن، وأتمتة عمليات مراقبة المنتجات في الفصل التاسع، وأتمتة مناولة القطع في الفصل العاشر، في حين كرس الفصلان الحادي عشر والثاني عشر للحديث عن عملية النقل ضمن المصنع وأتمتة التخزين وإخلاء الورش وآلات النقل الأوتوماتيكية. أما الفصل الأخير فقد تناول فيه المؤلف أتمتة التجميع.
