إن تاريخ الطائفة اليهودية في العراق موغل في القدم ويعود الى الالف الاول قبل الميلاد، حيث قادت الدولتين الآشورية والبابلية حملات عسكرية توجت بالقضاء على مملكتي إسرائيل ويهوذا وأسر سكانهما وجلبهم منفيين الى بلاد الرافدين. لعب أبناء الطائفة اليهوديةدوراً مهماً في عملية الإعداد لتأسيس الدولة العراقية الحديثة في العام 1921م، فقد كانوا من الطبقات المتعلمة والمثقفة في العراق آنذاك. كما أنهم كانوا جزءً لايتجزأمن الشعب العراقي فتشاركوا مع إخوانهم العراقيين كل هموم الوطن ومشاكله، حتى كان لبعضهم دوراً في أحداث ثورةالعشرين ضد الاحتلال البريطاني للعراق. بعد إعلان الملكية وتتويج فيصل ملكاً على العراق شرعت الطائفة اليهودية بالمساهمة الفاعلة من خلال عملها الجاد في تأسيس مؤسسات هذه الدولة الفتية والخدمة في تلك المؤسسات بروح وطنية خالصة، فهم مثلما شاركوا اخوتهم العراقيين همومهم وقضاياهم في العهد العثماني فعلوا الشيء ذاته في عهد الانتداب البريطاني وبدايات تأسيس الدولة العراقية. كانت بدايات نهاية الوجود اليهودي في العراق مع إنقلاب رشيد عالي الكيلاني في عام 1941 حيث حدثت أعمال تستهدف أرواح وأموال اليهود عرفت بإسم "الفرهود" التي راح ضحيتها الكثير من أبناء هذه الطائفة، وبصدور قانون إسقاط الجنسية العراقية عن اليهود وحجز أموالهم وممتلكاتهم، انتهت الطائفة اليهودية في العراق وهاجر أغلب أبنائها إلى إسرائيل، ومازال يهود العراق يحنون إلى بلاد الرافدين التي نهلوا من خيرها وحضارتها وفكرها الشيء الكثير
