تعد الكهرباء قبل كل شيء موضوع شحنات، يوجد نوعان من الشحنات: الشحنات الموجبة والشحنات السالبة، وتتجاذب الشحنات المختلفة بينما تتنافر الشحنات المتماثلة، وتحتوي كل مادة على شحنات، عندما يحتوي جسم ما على قدر متساوي من الشحنات الموجبة والسالبة، يقال أنه محايد.
بتغيير هذا التوازن، يصبح الجسم مشحوناً، فحينئذ يكتسب صفات إجتذاب أو تنافر ويتفاعل مع الأجسام المشحونة المحيطة به، وتصف الكهرباء مجموعة الظواهر الناتجة عن الشحنات.
ونميز بصفة عامة الكهرباء الإستاتيكية أو الإلكتروستاتيكية (الكهروستاتيكية) التي تتناول التفاعل فيما بين الشحنات المتوازنة، والكهروحركية التي تتناول الشحنات المتحركة داخل دائرة الكهربية.
تاريخياً، تم إثبات النوع الأول بفضل "ثالس Thalès" في القرن السادس ق. م. بينما لم يظهر النوع الثاني فعلياً إلى النور إلا بعد إختراع العامود الجاف بفضل فولتا Volta عام 1800.
