لحجامة هي نوع من الطب الطبيعي والبديل وشكل من الطب النبوي. هناك تعريفات متعددة قديمة وحديثة لطب أو علم الحجامة. إحدى التعريفات تقول بأن كلمة الحجامة مشتقة من حجم وحجّم. فنقول حجّم فلان الأمر أي أعاده إلى حجمه الطبيعي. وكلمة أحجم ضد كلمة تقدّم، فمن احْتَجَم حجم الأمراض من التعرّض له. إن زيادة الدم الفاسد في الجسم إثر توقف نموه في السنة الثانية والعشرين تقريباً، يجعله يتراكد في أَرْكَدِ منطقة في الجسر وهي الظهر. ومع تقدّم العمر تسبب هذه التراكمات عرقلة عامة لسريان الدم في الجسم، مما يقود إلى ما يشبه الشلل في عمليات كريات الدم الفتية، وبالتالي يصبح الجسم الضعيف، عرضة لمختلف أنواع الأمراض. فإذا احتجم، عاد الدم إلى نصابه وذهب الفاسد منه، أي ذلك الدم المحتوي على كميات كبيرة من الكريات الحمراء الهرمة وأشكالها الشاذة ومن الشوائب الدموية الأخرى. ويزول الضغط عن الجسم فيندفع الدم النقي المحتوي على الكريات الحمر الفتية، ليغذي الخلاايا والأعضاء ويخلصها من الرواسب الضارة والأذى والفضلات. هذا وأن الحجامة هي ما يطلق عليها اسم "كاسات الهواء" وهي ممارسة طبية عرفها الأقدمون، العرب والمسلمون والفراعنة والآشوريون والمصريون والصينيون. إلا أن هذا الطب عاد مجدداً إلى الواجهة، كنوع من حركة "الطب البديل"، وتكرس حضوره كعلم طبي في منظوره الجديد، مدعماً بالنتائج الشفائية الباهرة، ومرتكزاً على أبحاث سريرية ومخبرية كثيرة أجراها عدد من الفرق الطبية السورية والعربية والأجنبية. ومن خلال هذا الكتاب سيتعرّف القارئ على نشوء طب الحجامة، كعلم، والأدوات المستعملة في هذا الفن الطبي، والأماكن التي تجري عليها عملية الحجامة، والأمراض التي بالإمكان البرء منها من خلال ممارسة عملية الحجامة.
